Why get a dedicated Valheim server?
In a normal Valheim co-op game the world only exists while the host is playing. On a dedicated server the world is always up: your crew can log on, farm, build and sail whenever they want, and nobody’s PC has to carry the load.
What to look for in a Valheim server host
Bring your world with you
You can upload an existing world (the .db and .fwl files) to the server and pick up where you left off.
Pick a location near your group
Valheim is sensitive to lag in combat and when sailing. Choose the server location closest to most of your players.
Back up before big updates
Keep automatic backups on, especially around major patches.
Crossplay if you need it
If some of your group play on Xbox or Game Pass, make sure crossplay can be switched on.
How to set up a Valheim server
Choose Valheim
Pick a plan and select Valheim. The dedicated server installs for you.
Name it and set a password
Set the server name, world name and a password of at least 5 characters (it can’t contain the server name).
Upload your world (optional)
Your worlds are in AppData/LocalLow/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local on Windows. Upload the .db and .fwl files.
Join
In Valheim go to Start Game, Join Game, Add Server, and enter the address and port your host gives you.
Valheim server settings worth changing
- World modifiers
- Combat difficulty, death penalty, resource rates, raids and portals can all be changed with presets or individual modifiers.
- Crossplay
- Turning on crossplay lets Xbox and Game Pass players join. It changes how players connect, so everyone joins with a join code.
- Public or private
- Keep the server unlisted if it’s just for friends. The password still applies either way.
Questions
How many players can join a Valheim server?
The standard limit is 10 players. Some hosts let you raise it with mods.
Do dedicated servers need a password?
Yes. The server password has to be at least 5 characters, and it can’t contain the server name.
Can Xbox and PC players play together?
Yes, if crossplay is turned on for the server.
Can I move my single-player world to the server?
Yes. Upload the world’s .db and .fwl files and set that world name on the server.
