Free hosts are great for testing an idea for an evening. For a world your friends can join any time, they get frustrating fast. Here’s why, and what I use instead.
What you need to know
Queues and shutdowns
Most free servers wait in a queue to start and shut down when nobody is online, so friends can’t just hop on.
Little memory
Free plans are tiny. Fine for vanilla with a couple of players, not for modpacks.
Limited control
Plugins, mods, backups and file access are often restricted.
The alternative
A small paid plan costs a few dollars a month and stays online 24/7.
Worth knowing
Running 24/7 costs the host money, so free plans make up for it somewhere: waiting in a queue to start, the server stopping when it’s empty, ads, or very little memory. That’s fine for testing a plugin or showing a friend a seed, and painful for a long-term world.

Not reliably. 24/7 uptime costs the host money, so free plans make up for it with queues, limits or ads.
Can I move my free server world to a paid host?
Usually, yes. Download the world folder from the free host and upload it to the new server.
