More memory

Big modpacks need several times the memory of vanilla. Check the modpack’s recommended RAM.

One-click modpacks

Look for installs straight from CurseForge and Modrinth, so the server matches the pack exactly.

Same versions everywhere

Every player needs the same modpack and mod versions as the server.

Back up before updating

Modpack updates can break worlds. Take a backup first.

Worth knowing

The easiest way to run a modpack with friends is to install the exact pack on the server with the host’s modpack installer, and have everyone install the same pack version through the CurseForge or Modrinth app. Mismatched versions are the most common reason people can’t join.

Questions

Can I add mods to an existing server?

Yes, if it’s running Fabric or Forge (or NeoForge). Upload the mods to the mods folder, and give players the same ones.

Can I use plugins and mods together?

Not on a normal server. Plugins need Paper, mods need Fabric or Forge. Hybrid server software exists but is less stable.
