Long Zomboid runs are the whole point, and they’re hard to keep going when one person has to host every session. A dedicated server keeps the world persistent, so anyone can log on, loot and build while the others are offline.
What to look for in a Project Zomboid server host
Mods come from the Workshop
Add each mod’s Workshop ID and Mod ID in the server settings. Players download them automatically when they join.
Everyone on the same build
The server and every player need to be on the same game build (for example Build 42), or nobody can connect.
Backups matter in long runs
A corrupted save hurts a lot 60 days in. Turn automatic backups on.
How to set up a Project Zomboid server
Choose Project Zomboid
Pick a plan and select Project Zomboid, on the same build your group plays.
Set the basics
Server name, password and admin password.
Sandbox settings
Zombie population, loot rarity, XP multiplier and more live in the sandbox settings.
Add mods
Put Workshop IDs on the WorkshopItems= line and Mod IDs on the Mods= line in the server’s .ini file.
Join
In the game choose Join, add a server with the IP and port (16261 by default).
Project Zomboid server settings worth changing
- Zombie population and respawn
- The biggest lever on difficulty. Turn respawn off for a slower, more survivable run.
- Loot rarity
- How much you find in each container.
- XP multiplier
- Speeds up skill levelling if your group plays in short sessions.
- PvP and safehouses
- Decide whether players can hurt each other and claim safehouses.

Do my friends need to install the mods?
No. The game downloads the server’s Workshop mods when a player joins.
How do I make myself admin?
Log in as “admin” with the admin password you set, then give other players access with setaccesslevel.
