What you need to know
Start small
A vanilla or lightly modded world for a few friends runs on a small plan. Upgrade later if you need to.
Use Paper
Paper runs noticeably better than vanilla server software on the same plan, and supports plugins.
Pre-generate the world
Generating new chunks is the heaviest thing a server does. A pre-generation plugin smooths out exploring.
Pay for a longer term if you’re staying
Longer billing periods are usually cheaper per month.
Worth knowing
Most lag on a small server isn’t the plan being too small, it’s something making the server work harder than it needs to: huge view distances, lots of entities, or new chunks generating as players fly around. Fix those first and a cheap plan goes a long way.
